Jaro, Iloilo City
Iloilo, Philippines The Lady of the Candles is the only rose among the all-male collection of statues which line the walls of the cathedral's interiors. The Jaro Cathedral is the first and only cathedral in Panay built in 1864.

The oblation at the Iloilo City Campus of the University of the Philippines Visayas is said to be the most good-looking among all the oblations in the country. Too bad the new flyover blocks its view from across the street.

Iloilo’s landmark, the Arroyo Fountain serves as kilometer-zero for the island of Panay in Central Philippines. It sits right in front of the old Iloilo Provincial Capitol.

With a fist and a stern look, this larger-than-life-sculpture by Francesco Riccardo Monti, guarding the entrance of the former Iloilo City Hall, is entitled “Order.” It is paired with “Law” which sits at the other side of the main entrance.

Nuestra Senyora de la Candelaria, the lady of candles, or “Notre Dame du Bougies” as what pacfiic_leopard (Gian) calls it, is found at the Jaro Cathedral. It is said that a man found this statue along the river, he attempted to lift it but we was surprised to have found it too heavy. Several men were required to carry it, which at the time was still a small statue. It was then placed displayed inside a box in the Jaro Cathedral, where it magically … miraculously grew too big for its container.

The Arroyo Fountain is one of my favorite landmarks in Iloilo, this picture was taken before it was repainted and its fountain fixed. The repainted Arroyo Fountain looks so much better than when it looked like it was a neglected artwork at the heart of the city or Panay rather. If only its fountain is switched on 24/7 and installed with animated and colorful lights.

The Jaro belfry is one of the most overrated landmarks of the city, IMO. I see it most of the time when someone makes a feature about Iloilo or when tourists come to Iloilo and upload their pictures onilne. (more…)
